In his famed 1965 book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” consumer advocate Ralph Nader argued that the automobile industry’s focus on style over safety was needlessly killing thousands of people each year. Nader’s claims helped provoke Congress to create the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA is the federal agency responsible for the enforcement of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, or FMVSS, a comprehensive set of regulations on vehicle design, construction and performance.
