On October 28, Brian Brookey addressed LGBTQ+ rights at the DRI Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Following the past several years of real and significant gains in LGBTQ+ rights, state legislatures are now proposing and passing hundreds of bills to undermine or undo this progress. The newly constituted Supreme Court has made clear that it is willing to give great deference to “religious liberty” arguments, even when they may conflict with the civil rights of others, and both the majority opinion and one of the concurrences in the Dodds case signal an appetite for rolling back other protections for the LGBTQ+ community – including marriage equality. The non-political presentation informed attendees of the various laws that are being passed and analyzed whether current fears about where the Supreme Court may go next are an overreaction or a real cause for concern.
