Matt Fletcher Comments to Law.com Pro Mid-Market on Law Firm Mergers

March 29, 2024

On March 28, Law.com Pro Mid-Market quoted Matt Fletcher in “What Should Midsize Firms Consider When Contemplating a Merger?” Matt commented on the August 2023 merger between Tucker Ellis and his previous firm, Connor, Fletcher & Hedenkamp LLP (CFH).

“We had two major problems,” Matt explained. “We had too much work and the founder of our firm, Ed Connor, wanted to retire. But really, he couldn’t because he wouldn’t leave his partners in the state we’d be in with the amount of work we had to do and the lack of talent. For a small firm, if you lose one or two of these big cases, because they settle or something happens quickly that you don’t expect, your financial model changes greatly. Looking at that kind of risk model—with one primary rainmaker paying eight lawyers $200,000-plus a year before I see a single penny—it just didn’t make sense to me.”

Ultimately, when CFH began searching for a firm to acquire them, it was Tucker Ellis’s culture that stood out. Although other firms were interested in hiring Matt, Tucker Ellis was interested in bringing in the entire team.
