Lawrence A. Callaghan

Lawrence Callaghan is Counsel in the San Francisco office of Tucker Ellis & West LLP. Larry's trial practice emphasis is in complex business litigation. In particular, he specializes in financial institution, securities, and antitrust litigation, including class action defense. As a former federal prosecutor, he devotes a substantial amount of his practice to white collar criminal defense. Larry has defended numerous financial institutions and international businesses in class action and Business & Professions Code Section 17200 cases. He has tried cases in federal and California state courts. Larry has also argued numerous appeals in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals as well as in the California District Courts of Appeal.

In 1972, upon graduation from law school, Larry joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California. Thereafter, from 1976-1977, he was the Special Assistant to the Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs at the United States Department of Justice, Washington, DC. While at the DOJ, in addition to supervising the Department's legislative program, Larry was a member of the Legislative Group, Presidential Task Force on Corporate Payments Abroad, the Executive task force that developed the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He has been in private practice since 1977.

Mr. Callaghan is a member of the State Bar of California and American Bar Association, including membership in the Litigation, Antitrust and Criminal Justice sections. Active in the San Francisco Bank Attorneys' Association, he served as its chair in 1998. He frequently lectures at the California Bankers' Association Bank Counsel Seminar on litigation and related topics. He has also lectured at conferences and meetings of the American Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the California Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB). He co-authored for CEB the Advance Trial Practice Series books titled Securities Litigation- State & Federal published in 1985 and 1988. From 1965 - 1968 Larry was in the U.S. Army assigned to The Office Of The Inspector General, Defense Communication's Agency, Department of Defense.

Mr. Callaghan is one of six lawyers, elected by the Judges of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, to a three year term beginning in 2010, as a Northern District of California Lawyer Delegate to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Council.
